The purpose of the Training Program is to encourage a strong scientific research environment at KUMC through support of pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows in funded basic science and clinical research laboratories. Interdepartmental and collaborative research projects are encouraged, as a major goal of the Program is to foster the development of externally funded training programs and program project applications. In brief, requirements for participation for the Program are as follows:

· We will accept only one application from a given laboratory.

· Predoctoral students must have passed their Comprehensive Examinations by June 1, 2008.

· Mentors may be affiliated with any School and any academic department of The University of Kansas Medical Center.

· Mentors of pre-doctoral candidates shall be members of the Graduate Faculty and all Mentors shall have secured funds for supplementation of the trainee stipend and support of the research project.

· Trainees are expected to present their research at a University-wide Biomedical Research Symposium to be held in the spring, and to complete a standard report form near the conclusion of the year.

· Trainees may apply for a second year of support based on outstanding progress during the first year. Postdoctoral trainees applying for a second year of support must provide evidence that they have submitted an application for external funding by May 1, 2008 (provide the title of the proposal, date submitted, and name of external funding organization to which he/she submitted the requisite application). They are eligible for a second year of support only if this condition has been met.

The Training Program Selection Committee will review the applications and select fellowship recipients from among those proposed by the faculty. Criteria will include
(1) previous training and productivity of the candidate
(2) scientific quality of the proposed research project, to include potential for further funding
(3) strength of the Mentor's record for training students and fellows.

Please note that the application/instruction form is somewhat different from the one used in previous years. This year's form is a Word document and is attached to this email. In addition, you may download the form from the BRTP website (http://www2.kumc.edu/BRTP/). The deadline for receipt of applications is Friday, May 2, 2008 by 5pm. The FY09 Biomedical Scholars will be announced by June 2, 2008, and funding will begin July 1, 2008.
