A national life sciences publication has ranked the top locations for postdoctoral fellows to work, including the University of Kansas Medical Center at No. 21 overall and No. 3 among academic institutions.
The Scientist surveyed more than 3,000 non-tenured life scientists and ranked more than 80 schools and research centers. The Medical Center's overall ranking is the highest in school history and puts it ahead of Duke University, Washington University, and the National Institutes of Health, among others. The magazine noted particular strengths in the Medical Center's offerings in benefits and family life.
“This is great news, and the ranking is indicative of the emphasis and importance we place on our postdoctoral fellows,” said Allen Rawitch, PhD, vice chancellor for Academic Affairs and dean of Graduate Studies. “We are always striving to make the Medical Center a top location for the nation's most promising researchers.”
As competition for funding and grants increases, institutions rely on other factors to attract top candidates. In this year's survey, respondents rated the “family life” category as one of the most important factors in choosing an institution, demonstrating the Medical Center's commitment to providing more than world-class academics and research.
“The postdoc experience is about more than just lab work,” Dr. Rawitch said. “We make a concerted effort to construct an outstanding overall experience, both personally and professionally.”
